Downtime

We partnered with Alisha Ramos to expand the world of Downtime beyond the inbox. What began as a beloved Substack newsletter about rest, creativity, and joyful discoveries grew into a visual ecosystem, from a cozy content-rich website to a distinctive brand system that made every post feel instantly recognizable.

Context

Downtime had already built a loyal audience through its thoughtful, personality-driven newsletter, but the brand itself hadn’t yet been fully translated into a visual system. Alisha wanted a home for evergreen content like book recommendations and curated discoveries, along with a cohesive look that could carry across Substack posts, promotional graphics, and future growth. The challenge was creating something structured enough to organize a growing archive, while still feeling warm, slow, and delightfully human.

Solution

We built a visual and digital system for Downtime that made the brand feel as intentional and inviting as the writing itself. At the center of the identity is a custom snail illustration, a quiet, memorable symbol of rest, slowness, and moving through life with care. From there, we developed a flexible design language that could stretch across a content-driven website, Substack posts, and promotional graphics, giving Downtime a recognizable presence wherever it showed up.

Website

We designed and developed a cozy, editorial-style website that gave Downtime a permanent home beyond the inbox. The site was built to highlight evergreen content like book lists, recommendations, and past discoveries, making it easy for readers to browse, revisit, and share. Soft colors, playful layouts, and thoughtful typography kept the experience warm and personal, capturing the feeling of stumbling on something lovely and wanting to linger a while. Even though the brand now lives fully on Substack, the site remains a snapshot of how expansively Downtime could live online.

Substack Branding

Alongside the site, we created a full Substack brand system that transformed each issue into a cohesive visual experience. We designed the snail logo, title graphics, collage styles, and in-post elements that helped structure the newsletter while keeping it expressive and human. The result was a toolkit Alisha could use again and again, allowing Downtime to feel consistent without ever feeling templated, and reinforcing the sense that each issue is a small, carefully assembled world.
